The Bilingual method of teaching English was invented by Prof. C.J. Dodson. In this method two languages are used, on that is to be learnt and the other, mother-tongue. Mother-tongue is used to achieve the target language.

The main characteristic of Bilingual method are following:

(i) Emphasis is not laid on creating situations as in Direct method but situations are created just by giving the mother-tongue equivalent of English words.
(ii) The unit of teaching is a sentence.
(iii) Rigorous practice is under taken in sentances patterns.
(iv) The use of mother-tongue is not exactly like translation method. However, the mother-tongue is used to explain the meaning of new words, phrases, idioms sentences, grammatical points and rules.
(v) It is not used for word translation.
