Bilingual Method

The word ‘bilingual’ denotes a person who uses two languages fluently. This method was developed by J. Dodson. He recommended this method for teaching a foreign language. A child know the language of his parents, but a second language is learnt either for purpose of education or because of historical, political or social reason. The word bilingual is generally used to refer to any degree of knowledge of two languages by the same individual. When we use the word ‘bilingual’ as a method of teaching a foreign language, we simply mean the use of the student’s native language as media to learn an unknown foreign language.

This method makes use of the mother tongue in explaining the meaning of words, phrases, idioms, sentence constructions, structures and grammatical rules.

Objective of the Bilingual Method: – Following are the objectives of bilingual method: –
(i) To help the students to speak fluently and accurately in the target language.
(ii) To prepare the learner in such a manner that he can achieve true bilingualism.

Process of Bilingual Method: – The bilingual method is built around situations. In this methods, the emphasis is on pattern practice. Mother-tongue is only used to make the meanings of English sentences and words clear to the students. Thus the mother-tongue in the bilingual method has a restricted use. It is used only for specific purposes, for example, making the meanings of English sentences and words clear to the students. It is used so that the meaning of English sentences and words may not remain vogue to students and the pattern practice becomes meaningful for them.
