Question- "Structural approach is the foundation upon which the study of English teaching should develop." Discuss.

Ans.

English is an International language. It is taught throughout the world either as first language or second language. Method approach and technique are the terms that have created a lot of confusion in the minds of teacher of language, out of these terms method refers to a way of teaching a language based on systematic principles and procedures. A method is related with the pressure of the selected and graded meterial.

According to Dictionary of Education, "Method is the relationship established by an educational institution with a group of participants for the purpose of systamatically diffusing knowledge among them."

In this way we can say that method directly deals with a teacher's manner of performance and the mode he adopts in accomplishing his task and hence is means to an end. It assists in reaching out to pupils in a manner that fulfils their intellectual persuit and hence index of teacher effectiveness method also related with teaching children of different age groups. It helps the teacher organise his lesson in an ordely manner.

The various methods of teaching reading to beginners in English are -

1. Translation-cum-grammar method.

2. Direct or Natural method.

3. Billingual method.

4. Audio-lingual method or The stuctural approach.

5. Language laboratory method.

6. Situational approach.

7. Herbartian method.
