General Aims of Teaching Poetry :- The following are the general aims of teaching poetry :–
(i) To enable the students to appreciate beauty, rhythm and style.
(ii) To enable the students to recite the poem, with proper rhythm and intonation etc.
(iii) To enable the students to enjoy poetry and develop a taste for it.
(iv) To make students understand the thought and imagination contained in the poem.
(v) To train and develop the students in expression of their ideas in a rhythmic way.
(vi) To develop the emotions of the students.
(vii) To develop imaginative power in the students.
(viii) To develop their aesthetic sense.
(ix) To give pleasure and lay foundation for an adequate appreciation of English Poetry.
(x) To create a love for English literature in them.
(xi) To leave them with a sense of satisfaction that comes from play, from absorption or from any spontaneous activity.
