Question- What are the advantages and disadvantages of remedial teaching?
Ans.
The possible advantages of remedial teaching are :
(i) Remedial teaching is highly effective as the individual's learning ability are acknowledged or recognized and thereafter attended to.
(ii) The student's are able to gain more confidence through remedial teaching carried out in small groups. When the self-esteem of the child gets uplifted, s/he is able to perform better.
(iii) Communication skills are improved with the upliftment of a pupil's self-esteem.
(iv) The child/pupil through the technique of incentivisation feels motivated or encouraged. With encouragement, there is more retention or classification of concepts.
(v) Develops a feeling of ease and comfort among the student's undergoing remedial teaching. Instills a feeling of camaraderie among student's involved in the peer learning program.
(vi) Reduces levels of wastage and stagnation. Provides re-enforcement of learning especially for those areas which are used little or which are forgotten by the student's or which were learned in a faulty manner earlier.
(vii) Provides necessary and correct foundation to rectify past mistakes and improve future learning.
(viii) Helps to rectify concepts that have been confused or misunderstood.
(ix) Hastens the process of learning the subject.
(x) Gifted student's are promoted to expand learning.
(xi) Inculcates regular and better study habits helps student's realize their full potential.
The possible disadvantages of remedial teaching are :
(i) Remedial teaching may not be effective if the classes are overcrowded.
(ii) As remediation is offered after the usual lecture hours, the teacher may have limited time for every class and hence it is not possible for a teacher to explain every step of the problems or assignments.
(iii) Sometimes equal opportunity is not offered to all the groups. There are many instances where a single student dominates the whole tutorial session.
(iv) During remedial teaching, the teacher can be biased and not pay equal attention to all the student's in the specific group.
