Process of Training of Silent Reading

According to Ryburn, the following steps are used in silent reading :-

(i) The teacher should first tell his students what silent reading really is. Then he should give them ample practice in it.

(ii) He should train them to read really silently. He should carefully check any tendency to whisper the words. He should not allow his students to pronounce the words even to themselves.

(iii) He should give them a definite time in which they are to read a passage. He should, however first ascertain how much time will be required for reading it silent. He should gradually reduce the time.

(iv) He should ask his students to read silently only those passages, which they can understand and appreciate.

(v) He should begin silent reading in secondry classes with easy stories with a vocabulary with which the students are acquainted.

(vi) He should test what the students have gained from what they have read by questions on the content.
