OER can be divided into as many 'types' as there are needs within the education sector. While these can be assets like worksheets, lesson plans, lesson resources, references articles and so on, OER also encompasses open courseware (OCW). Although there is no consensus regarding OER categories, creative commons has useful list which includes the following types :

(i) Digital learning objects (individual digital assets)

(ii) Digitised object libraries (online collection of assets)

(iii) OER encyclopedias (collaborative written reference materials)

(iv) Open textbooks (free and adaptable text)

(v) OER courseware (open online university courses and programmes)

(vi) OER courses (short courses)

(vii) Open course achieves (libraries or indexes of courses)

(viii) Online tools that support the open community.
