An effective way of organising or categorising OER is according to the level of functionality offered by the OER website and it is done through directories, platforms and repository.

Directories : A directory provides list of OER and links to resources available elsewhere on the web.
Examples include (OL's OER Directory and in the case of open access journals, the Directory of Open Access Journal (DOAJ), which links to research articles in the same way.

Platforms : By platforms, we mean specific digital tools designed to do something with the OER. This could include tools to develop new, or adapt existing, OER. Alternatively, the platform could be designed license new OER with an open license. Eg. include Wikipedia and OER commons.

Repository : A repository is a database or collection of OER, usually once developed by a particular institution. An example of an institutional repository is the MIT’s open courseware repository.
