Herbartain Approach :- This approach is one of the widely used approach for lesson planning. This approach is subject matter centred and more emphasiss is given on the presentation of the subject matter. In this method, no attention is paid to the interests and abilities of the students. In other words, this approach emphasises on memory level.

This method is based on the principle that knowledge is given to man from outside and knowledge keeps accumulating in him. According to this approach, if new knowledge is related to the previous knowledge, it will be more effective. Also, new knowledge should also be arranged in a form.

The Herbrtarain approach is based on five steps due to which it is often termed as Herbartian five-steps approach. These steps are as follows :-

(i) (a) Preparation/ Introduction (b) Statement of aim.
(ii) Presentation.        (iii) Comparison.
(iv) Generalisation.       (v) Application.
