Question- Which programs of women empowerment have been run by the government?

Nodal departments looking after the work related to the welfare of women and children have started many programs for women empowerment through employment and income generation. These include welfare and support services, awareness building, gender sensitive and other development-oriented measures. The Swayamsiddha Women Empowerment Program launched in 2001 aims to create awareness among women and help them achieve economic empowerment through small scale income generating activities. The main focus of this program is to bring together various sectoral services like literacy, health, non-formal education, rural development, water supply and entrepreneurship. Another empowerment effort is ‘Swashakti Project’ which aims to have a massive impact on the lives of women through amalgamation of activities of empowerment and development. This scheme has changed the lives of poor and weaker section women by increasing their awareness level, bringing literacy, providing information about health, nutrition, legal rights, agricultural and non-farm enterprises and facilitating credit for them.

The program of Hostels for Working Women aims to promote women’s mobility in the job market by providing safe and affordable housing facilities to working women from low-income groups.
