Question- Explain the concept of ‘Social Change’.

Ans.

  • The concept of Social Change will be sea from the folllowing points :

    (1) According to Brown, there is no difference between social change and cultural change. Both are interrelated in the sense that cultural change is an important part of social change.

    (2) Chopin has divided cultural change into three categories—

    (i) Those changes which are concerned with material culture.
(ii) Those changes which are connected with non-material culture and
(iii) Those changes which are linked up with composite culture. The examples of these three are serially-social order, ideals and forms of administration.

    (3) According to Spencer, social change and social evaluation are identical. In his opinion social changes are uniform, gradual and progressive. Spencer has further pointed out that as we progress from less painful position to more comfortable positions, the process of social changes also undergoes the essential stages of evaluation.

    (4) According to Ogburn, there is no distinction between social change and cultural change. He advocates two forms of culture namely— (i) Material and (ii) Non-material. Material culture is concerned with all those things and objects which man has made for his welfare and happiness. Radio, Television, Means of transport and communication etc. are examples in this connection. Non-material culture is concerned with human ideas, attitudes, values, habits, customs, traditions and our mentalities. Ogburn asserts that first the change occurs in the material culture and then in the non-material. When material culture changes and non-material remains the same or lags behind, cultural lag occurs. Indian society is an example of cultural lag. Education is the only means to remove this cultural lag.
