Answer -

Wider Meaning of Education

According to the wider meaning of education, education is a lifelong process. The whole life of a human being is a period of education and a person keeps on learning something or the other from his birth till his death. It is considered within the broad sense of education. Such education is not limited to a particular person, time, place, country, but whatever the child comes in contact with, it comes under education. When a child is born, he is in a very helpless state at the time of birth and at the same time the process of his learning also starts. He first learns the lesson in his mother’s lap, then gradually it is learned from the home environment. After this, as he grows up and comes in contact with the people of the society, in the same way it keeps on learning. Hence education continues from birth till the last moment of life. Some educationists believe that life is education and education is life in itself. To make the broader meaning of education more clear, some prominent scholars have expressed their views as follows:

According to T. Raymonte, "Education is a process of development in which consist the passage of a human being from infancy to maturity the process where by he adopts himself gradually in various ways to his physical, social and spiritual environment."

According to J.S. Mckenzie, "In wider sense, it is a process, that goes on throughout life and is promoted by almost every experience in life."

According to Dumbill, "Education is its widest sense, include all influence which act upon an individual during his passage from cradle to grave."

Narrow Meaning of Education

According to the narrow meaning of education, it is from the education given to the child in the school. This type of education is provided through a definite plan, definite time and place, definite method of teaching and teacher. According to this, education is assumed to be limited to the study of certain special effects and subjects. This education does not make all round development of the child. Therefore, it can also be termed as book knowledge and school education. Explaining the narrow meaning of education, some prominent scholars have expressed their views in the following way which are as follows -

According to Prof. Driver - "Education is a process in which and by which the dignity, character and behaviour of the child are molded into a particular mould."

According to McKenzie - "In narrow sense education may be taken to mean any consciously directed effort to develop and cultivate our powers."

According to G.H. Thomson - "The influence of the environment on the individual with a view to producing a permanent change in his habits of behaviour of thought and attitude."
