Is education science or art or both? Explain.
Answer -
Nature or Form of Education
(Nature of Education)
In relation to education like social scholars, it appears that what is the nature or form of education? Education is art or science or education is science or art both, so it is worth considering -
Education as a ScienceEducation is a science. But what is science? Clarifying this meaning of science, G.P. Gooch wrote that "Science is a systematic set of knowledge concerning the relationship between the cause and effect of a particular event. Therefore, science is a special branch of knowledge in which the study of the cause and effect of a particular event is done sequentially on the basis of observations and tests. But whenever the question arises whether education should be considered a science or not, there are following two ideologies in this regard -
(A) Education is Science - The following points were presented in relation to it -
(i) Education is full of general facts
(ii) Educational knowledge is orderly and systematic.
(iii) Objective study of education is not influenced by religion and morality like Science.
(B) Education is not a Science - In relation to this, the following facts were presented -
(i) Religion and morality are neither necessary nor useful, whereas ethics have special importance in education.
(ii) There is generalization in science but there is a lack of generalization in education.
(iii) Science is a systematic order of any goal but education lacks systematic knowledge of facts.
Education as an Art
Education is an art but what is an art? Art is not only in knowledge but also in skill. Explaining the meaning of art, it has been written under the word corpus of education,
"Art is human activities aimed towards participation or proficiency in aesthetics."
So, in other words, it can be said that which gives knowledge of the means of achieving the objectives of a particular subject, that is an art.
Now whether education should be considered an art or not, there are following two opposing ideologies in this regard -
(A) Education is an art - The following arguments were given in support of education being an art -
(i) Artist or litterateur does not pay special attention to the means in achieving his objectives, whereas the educationist uses objective means in the description of facts and events.
(ii) The artist does not pay special attention to reality under the presentation of facts, whereas reality is essential for the educationist.
(iii) The litterateur or artist observes nature in his own special way and presents it. The educationist experiences the events in his mind based on his sources. On the basis of this vision, education is an art because under this, the teacher, according to his ideals and ideas, imprints different types of ideas on the child’s psyche so that all-round development of his personality can take place.
