Question- Give a critical appraisal of existing Syllabus in English? (Kanpur 2009)
Or
Give any two suggestions for the improvement of English curriculum.
Or
Critically apraise the existing syllabus of English at High School level (any Board) and give suggestions for its improvement.
Ans.
Syllabus is a scheduled information about the knowledge imparted in the students in different subjects by the teacher through out the teaching session.
Critical appraisal of the syllabus in English : Syllabus plays very important role in teaching of english. Syllabus should touch the mental ability of the students it should be time oriented as well. We can criticise the present existing syllabus at lower secondary levell (class-VI, VII and VIII) and secondary level (class IX and X) an the basis of its merits and demerits :
Lower Secondary Level : Present syllabus in English at lower secondary level has been presented by subjects experts but it requires a bit of modification its merits and demerits are given below :
Merits : There are as under :
- All the parts of english prose, poetry, grammar, translation and composition have been given proper place by subjects experts in the syllabus at this level.
- We also find in present syllabus enough matter for practice of oral enough matter for practice of oral work, reading, writing grammar and composition.
- Syllabus is systematia and organized and it is chelpful in the gradual development of students in english language.
- The syllabus is suited to present situation.
- There is also space for utilizing leisure and vocation in the present syllabus.
- The syllabus is full of variety and interest.
- It has been prepared according to the child psychology by the well known educationists.
Demerits : There are as under :

Present syllabus in english at lower secondary level is not us to the mental level of the students. It consist of enough matter of the secondary. level. Which is burden some for the students.

Prescribed grammar in present syllabas is difficult. It is out of their mental ability. The students does not take interest in grammar.

There is a lack of mental and physical development of the students in the present syllabus. It is because there is no any process for free thinking.
Suggestion for improvement of English Curriculum :
(i) Child centred approach :
(i) Curriculum should be based on needs, interests and status of children. It should be able to fulfil the requirement of children.
(ii) Emphasis on Conversation : In the curriculum of English language, more emphasis should be given to conversation skills rather than traditional translation method.
