Question- Mother tongue helps or hinders English language acquisition? Justify.
Ans.
Every child learn speaking mother tongue by mother and his family. As a matter of fact children learn mother tounge without any effort. English language is an international language that occupies first place in languages of world community in india. It is a compulsory subject for study to Indian students. They are bound to learn it and thus face various difficulties in grasping it.
India is a multi-lingual and multi cultural community in which a child need to learn at least two languages. One his mother tongue and second his national language. Further to complete his education he learns a foreign language (English). A child learn his mother tongue is a quite natural way without making any deleberate efforts. But english culture is unknown to him and he is not familiar with english style of living. so he faces difficulties in learning english language and need hard labour and practice.
One another draw back with English language is it typical system of phonology. Forty five sounds have only twenty six alphabets that work in combination to represent various sounds. This unfit system arises difficulties before the learner and he needs to consult his teacher or dictionary for learning pronunciation of each word.
Some other hinders in the way of English language acquisition due to mother tongue are :

Sound is Indian language differs from that of English language. Indian children substitute their language sound for the sound of English word.

Pupils do not have knowledge of sound of vowels and consonants. While speaking they slus over words and pronounce.

In the absence of knowledge of intonation and stress is english language the spech become in effective.

Many teachers do not have sufficient knowledge of english sound system so they do not speaks correctly.

The mother tongue speech habit train the speed organs difficulty it becomes hard for students to adjust their speech organs to new sounds. This is called retroactive inhibition.

During childhood the spech habits are in the process of formation they require much guidance and training in producing articulate speech.
