Education Commissions in India

University Education Commission (1948–49) – This commission was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. In 1949, University Education Commission submitted its report. Following were the majer recommendations of this Commission –
(i) The aims of education are to teach that life has meaning to make acquaint with the social philosophy, to train the democracy, to train for self development, the acquaint with cultural heritage etc.
(ii) There may be four categories of teachers such as professors, readers, lecturers and instructors.
(iii) The standardisation of admission to the university courses.
(iv) Increasing of Working days to 180 in a year enclosure of examination days.

Kothari Commission (1964–66) – It is popularly known as India Education Commission. It was an ad hoc commission. Kothari Commission was to examine all aspects of the educational sector. It advises guidelines and policies. Daulat Singh Kothari was its Chairman. The main recommendations of this commission was as under –
Standardization of educational system on 10+2+3 pattern.
1. Re-name of pre-primary education as pre-primary and the primary education.
2. Classification of schooling as upper primary or higher primary and high school.
3. Introduction of common public education
4. Increase in days of instruction.
5. Stress on women education.
6. Establishment of guidance and counselling centres. - Secondary Education Commission (1952–53) – It was appointed by the Government of India keeping in view the aims of development of personality, education for leadership, improvement of vocational capability and efficiency.
