Question- What are the important principles of remedial teaching?
Ans.
The important principles of remedial teaching are:
(i) Teaching approach should be student-friendly: For this to achieve, remedial teachers should identify pupil's diverse learning needs as soon as possible. Teachers must diverse different learning activities with the same teaching objective in mind. It is more effective for teachers to adopt a series of simple and relevant teaching activities than assigning one long teaching activity. Teachers may design meaningful learning situations, learning environments (especially for English subject), games or activities so as to provide personal learning experiences and stimulate their interest and initiative in learning.
(ii) Clear instruction should be provided: Pupils with learning difficulties are less competent in understanding written language. Therefore, remedial teachers should give pupils short and clear instructions to avoid confusion. They must explain clearly the arrangement of each learning activity if required and repeat the steps of activities for everyone to understand.
(iii) Main points should be summarised: The teachers should always sum up the main points in teaching and write the key phrases on the board to enhance pupils audio and visual memories. Teachers can ask the pupils to link up the acquired knowledge with their life experiences for ensuring the enhancement of effectiveness of learning.
(iv) Enhancement in learning interest and motivation : Pupils with learning difficulties may suffer from frequent frustration in their work. Therefore, the curriculum needs to be adapted to meet the needs of the pupils. Pupils can be extrinsically motivated through some incentive or reward so that they may gain a sence of achievement and recover their confidence and interest in learning.
(v) Encouragement of pupil's active participation in class activities : Pupil's with learning disabilities often lack self confidence and are more passive in class. They seldom ask questions or express their views. Remedial teachers should patiently encourage of active participation in class to develop pupil's interest in learning.
(vi) Focus on the learning process : Teaching should not only focus on the transmission of knowledge. It is also important to see that pupils are benefitted from the entire learning process. Teachers should provide ample opportunities in class for pupils to learn and practice and think what they've learnt.
(vii) Show concern for the performance of individual pupils : Pupils may encounter different problems in their studies. Therefore, teachers should carefully observe the learning process of individual pupils in class. Wherever necessary, they should provide individualised remedial teaching before and after class, during recess or lunch time so that they can remove their learning obstacles as early as possible. When making assignments, teachers should make notes of the common errors made and deliver the correct concepts and knowledge to them promptly.
