Following are the causes of speech defects -

1. Environmental Deprivation - If a student is neglected or abused, or does not pay attention on others speaking, he cannot learn to speech due to extreme environment deprivation.

2. Developmental Delays - Developmental delays can lead to speech and language problems.

3. Autism - Autism effects speech. Speech/language problem are often an early sign of autism.

4. Structural Problems - Structural problems e.g. cleft lip or cleft can interface with general speech.

5. Apraxia of Speech - It is a specific speech defect in which the pupil has difficulty in sequencing and executing speech movement.

6. Selective Mutism - It is when a pupil will not speak at all in some situations, often school.
