Place of English in Present Days :- English has an important place in a multilingual country like India. The schools will continue to teach English as a compulsory language along with the mother tongue (the regional language) and Hindi (the national language). English finds a suitable place in the three language formula approved by the Chief Ministers conference held in New Delhi in 1956. According to this, a student must learn :-

• mother-tongue, i.e. regional language.
• national language or any other Indian language in the case of those whose mother-tongue is the same as the national language.
• English.

Kothari Commission has presented a modified three-language formula which provides for the study of English in our schools as an important subject of curriculum. According to this formula, every student has to study English at one stage during his stay at the secondary school. The regional language is to be taught from class I to X, Hindi as the second language is to be introduced in class V and taught compulsorily. English as the third language may be introduced either in class V or class VIII.

Thus the three language formula offered by the commission is a safeguard to the study of English in a multilingual country like India.
