Reading :- Reading opens the gate of knowledge. It is more important than speaking and writing because most of us are concerned more with reading in life. Moreover, reading is a perennial source of joy and amusement. Hence, it is essential that the habit of reading should be developed in the child from the very beginning.

Reading is an important activity so that many scholars have said favourable words about it, some of which are:

According to Logan Smith - "People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading."

According to Addison :- Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.

According to Francis Bacon - "Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man."

According to Bulwair Lytton - "In science, read by preference, the newest works in literature the oldest. The classic literature is always modern."

According to the National Society for the Study of Education :- "Reading involves the recognition of the important elements of meaning in their essential relation including accuracy and thoroughness of comprehension."

Hence it is essential that the habit of reading should be developed in the child from very being. On the basis of nature and way of performance, reading may be of following kinds -
(i) Loud reading,
(ii) Silent reading,
(iii) Intensive reading,
(iv) Extensive reading.
(v) Supplementary reading,
(vi) Library reading.
