Question- State the objectives and role of language laboratory in teaching of English.

Objectives of Language Laboratory :- A language laboratory has following objectives.
(i) To develop reading skills.
(ii) To develop the pronunciation.
(ii) To develop listening skills.
(iv) To develop comprehension ability.
(v) To facilitate individual in variation language learning.

Role in English Teaching :- A language laboratory has the capacity to transmit a complete lesson of prose or poetry, or composition, translation, grammar, spellings, pronunciations with stress, accent and intonation, rhythm and rhyme. It can help enrich vocabulary as a direct method of teaching English.
In words of Robert Lado, “.....in a language laboratory students can be directed towards listening, speaking, reading and writing.....laboratory exercises can involve......listening, reporting, mimicry, memorisation, pattern substitution, addition, synthesis, oral composition, transformation, dictation, reading paced with a recording etc.” Therefore any material which is prerecorded and which the students can listen to and make its proper use for some learning experience, is a legitimate language material fit for a language laboratory. The student’s comprehension would be judged later during regular classwork.
