The terms 'internet' and 'World Wide Web' are often used synonymously, although technically they are different. The World Wide Web is a huge client-server system with millions of servers world wide. Each server maintains a collection of documents each document is stored as a file It can also generate documents on request. A server accepts requests to fetch a document and transfers it to the client. In addition, it accepts requests for storing new documents.

The WWW is the largest, most popular activity on the Internet. It is characterized by hypertext and multi-media capabilities (graphic, sound, video, etc) and can be considerd as a subset of the internet. The Web offers a single interface for accessing internet protocols (http, FTP, telnet, etc.)

A key feature of the Web is the use of hyperlinks - often simply called "links."

Hyperlinks allow to link directly from one web page to another. A web page is a single file consisting of hypertext used as a basic element of the web. Web sites are group of web pages of usually same topic in one location owned by one entity. A domain can contain one or more web sites. When a user click on a hyperlink, another page (or graphic or audio or video clip etc.) is displayed. This capability makes the Web a unique and powerful tool. The Web is composed of millions of Websites. A Website is a collection of Web pages (HTML documents) that are linked together and exist on a server Exploring a website begins with the home page. HTML is used to create interactive web pages consisting of hypertext.

Computers reading the Web pages are called a Web Client. Web clients view the pages with a program called a Web Browser. The World Wide Web is indexed through the use of search engines. These search engines come though the Web documents, idenflying text that is the basis for keyword seaching.

The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a address used to give the location of a resource on the web. A typical URL looks like this-

http://www.microsoft.com/ms.html

In the above URL, the first part (http:) is the 'service descriptor' to tell the server to use the http protocol. The '//' indicates the start of path. The rest of the part up to the / contain the domain name. The rest of the part specifies the complete path of the file to be fetched. If the path is not specified, the web server uses a predefined filename.
