  1. What is the main reason for gender discrimination?

Answer -

Men and women are equal in the eyes of law but in practice gender discrimination is visible in all social institutions. It starts from the family and spreads to all the social institutions.

If you look at a family, women are not treated equally as compared to men. In most of the households, the father is considered as the head of the family and hence he is also the authority of the family. Women often work in the kitchen and take care of the children and do other household chores. Whether women do any employment outside the home or not, but household work is her own special area. Because no money is given for household chores. Hence it is not considered important. Nowadays women are engaged in work outside the home. Still men are called bread earners. Because women are called women doing non-productive labor because of working in the house, this division of work in the field of household is simply called gender division of labour. A woman's work is done inside the house and hence it is left as private, whereas the work of a man is outside the house, it is called public work. In this way gender division of labour is unequal division of labour and all this happens in households. The man is generally the head of the family and the property and all the authority lies with the men, the result is that he establishes his dominance over the women and the real reason for this is the patriarchal system. Although women mainly look after the family, yet they get second place. In these patriarchal families, the inheritance is from the lineage of males. Women do not get equal share in property.

About 30 percent of households in India are run by women's earnings. Such families are called families run by women. It is true that these families are run by women and women do the work of maintaining the existence of the family, yet it is seen that the assault and mental stress with women remains the same. We understand this as unequal gender relations in the family.

In many ways, the reason for gender discrimination is the socialization found in the family. Girls and boys are developed in such a way that they adopt different qualities. For example, marriage and motherhood are the ultimate goals of girls while the work of boys is to make their career. Generally, it can be understood that a large part of the family income is used for their education. The logic in this is that the family gets what is spent on the education of the boy, while the money spent on the girl goes to her in-laws' in-laws, due to this attitude towards girls, it leads to feticide and girls is killed. The main reason for this is the increase in demand for dowry.

In this way the family is a great source of discrimination. It is only in the family that boys and girls are socialized for different types of roles. Here in the family this discrimination is not done on merit but only on gender. The way of working in this way is different for boy and girl. Gender becomes the basis of socialization. Because a person has contact with his family, then gender inequality arises in the family itself and in this way, it is also found in other institutions of the society.
