Gender roles are those roles which are expected of men and women on the basis of their gender. Gender roles have been passed down through generations. Traditionally, many societies held the belief that women were superior to men in parenting. Therefore, the traditional view of gender roles in relation to men suggests that men should be the head of their household, providing financial resources in the household and that important family decisions should be made by men. Although this approach is still dominant in many areas of society, an alternative perspective of traditional beliefs about gender roles has found continued and widespread support in the twenty-first century. The sociological perspective of gender roles is that since gender roles are learned, they can be forgotten and new and distinct roles can also be created. The feminist perspective indicates that gender roles are not merely ideas about what is appropriate for males and females, but that roles are also linked to the varying levels of power that males and females have in society.
