The role of women in politics is negligible. This applies to most societies. Earlier only men were allowed to participate in public affairs, vote or contest elections for public offices. Gradually gender issues emerged in politics. In different parts of the world, women formed their own organizations and agitated for equal rights. There were movements in various countries to give women the right to vote. These movements demanded to raise the political and legal status of women and to increase the opportunities of education and employment for them. Women’s movements demanding radical change also raised the demand for equality in the personal and family life of women. These movements are called feminist movements.

Political expression of the gender divide and political mobilization on this question helped to increase the role of women in public life. Today we find many women in professions like scientists, doctors, engineers, managers, college and university teachers, whereas earlier these jobs were not considered suitable for women. In some parts of the world, Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway and Finland have very high levels of women’s participation in public life.
