बी.एड. सेमेस्टर-1 प्रश्नपत्र-IV-C - जेण्डर, स्कूल एण्ड सोसाइटी (अंग्रेजी भाषाा में)

Question- Where is gender inequality prevalent in the society?

Answer -

This form of social inequality is visible everywhere but it is hardly recognized in the study of politics. Gender inequality is assumed to be natural or to say that it is natural and irreversible. But the basis of gender inequality is not the biological makeup of men and women, but the prevailing stereotypes and fixed social roles about both of them.

In the course of raising boys and girls, this belief is inculcated in their mind that the main responsibility of women is to run the household and take care of the children. This is reflected in the gender division of labour in most families. Women do all the work inside the house like cooking, cleaning, washing clothes and looking after the children, while men do the work outside the house. It's not that men can’t do all these things. Actually they think that it is the responsibility of women to do such things. But when money is available for all: these works from sewing to cutting, then men happily do this work outside the house. Most of the tailors or hotel cooks are men. Similarly, women should not do work outside the home - it is not so. In villages, women do work ranging from collecting water and firewood to tilling the fields. In cities also, we see that a poor woman is working as a maid in a middle-class family and a middle-class woman is going to the office to work. The truth is that most of the women do some work for their income in addition to their domestic work but their work is not valued much and they do not get credit for it even after working day and night.

The result of such division of labour is that the woman is confined to the four walls of the house and the public life outside has come under the control of men.
