Question- Write a short note on the Success of the League of Nations.
Answer -
Members of the League of Nations were expected to respect all other nation-states' territorial integrity and sovereignty and to disavow the use of military force as a means of resolving foreign conflicts.
The League sought to settle territorial disputes peacefully and was highly successful in some situations.
Some notable successes of the League include:
- Negotiating a diplomatic settlement between Iraq and Turkey over Mosul province in 1926.
- Successfully mediating a resolution to the border dispute between Colombia and Peru in the early 1930s.
- Resolving the Swedish-Finnish conflict over the Aland Islands (1920-21).
- Maintaining Albania’s stability (1921).
- Saving Austria from economic ruin.
- Resolving the partition of Upper Silesia (1922).
- Avoiding the outbreak of war between Greece and Bulgaria (1925) in the BalkAnswer
The League also extended substantial assistance to refugees.
- It helped eradicate white slavery and drug trafficking.
- It was very active in humanitarian efforts in the 1920s, bringing half a million POWs (prisoners of war) home.
- It aided Turkish refugees and targeted slave dealers and opium traffickers.
- It sponsored leprosy and malaria initiatives.
Additionally, the League did groundbreaking research in health surveys.
- It extended financial assistance to vulnerable states.
- It furthered foreign cooperation in labor relations and many other fields.
1935 the League ended its effective 15-year Saar region administration by holding a plebiscite under the command of a foreign military power.
It has also been very active in settling border conflicts—for example, it resolved a dispute over the Aaland Islands between Sweden and Finland and stopped a war between Greece and Bulgaria.
