Question- Explain the History and Origin of the League of Nations.

Answer -

The League of Nations was an international cooperation organization, created on 10 January 1920 at the initiative of the victorious Allied Powers at the end of World War I.

The strength of this proposal was so strong that definitive agreement on the text of the League of Nations Covenant had been reached within a few weeks of the opening of the Paris Peace Conference in January 1919.

The terrible losses of World War I led to an ever-growing public demand that some method be found to prevent the renewal of suffering and destruction, which was now seen as an inescapable part of modern war.

The creation of the League of Nations was an event of decisive importance in the history of international relations.

The League was formally disbanded on April 19, 1946; its powers and functions were transferred to the nascent United Nations.

The aim of the League was to stop war and encourage disarmament. The League aimed to make a better world by:

  • Improving people’s working conditions
  • Tackling disease

By the 1930s, the League had 58 nations as members.

It could offer arbitration through the Court of International Justice to enforce its will or apply trade sanctions against war-torn countries.

The League of Nations was also created to support the principles of collective security, avoid war, and end acts of aggression by one state against another.

The League of Nations was an effort to unify the world’s countries against the threat of a potential war.

For this purpose, an agreement was entered into and named The League of Nations Covenant.

The Covenant of the League of Nations:

  • Defined the League’s aims, constitution, and functions
  • Was signed as Part I of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919
  • Came into effect on 10 January 1920 with the rest of the treaty

In the ‘Preamble’ of the Covenant of the League of Nations, it is written:

"High Contracting Parties to foster international relations and maintain universal peace and security; by recognizing commitments not to return to war... commit to this League of Nations Covenant."
