Definition of Education
After knowing the above-mentioned meanings of education, it is also necessary to determine a proper definition of education. Determination of definition will help in clarification of meaning of education. Many Indian and Western scholars have tried to define the concept of education. Here the definitions propounded by Indian and Western scholars from different perspectives will be presented.
1. Definition of Education by Indian Scholars -
Keeping in view the various features of the process of education, various Indian scholars and educationists of ancient and modern times have presented the definitions of education. The details of the definitions defined by some of the main Indian scholars are described below -
Defined by Vivekananda - Vivekananda has also accepted that the spiritual powers of man are developed through education. He has clearly said, "Education is the expression of the Brahma Bhava inherent in man."
Defined by Arvind - Yogiraj Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, the famous scholar of the modern era, has accepted education as an auxiliary process which helps in the spiritual progress of man. In his words, "Education is to help the progressive soul with the elements contained within it."
Defined by Tagore - Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, keeping in mind the broader meaning of education, presented the definition of education in these words, the highest education is that which not only does education give us but also adapts our life to every existence.
Defined by Mahatma Gandhi - Mahatma Gandhi has also accepted education as a comprehensive and multifaceted process. According to him, by education I mean the all-round manifestation of the powers inherent in the body, mind and soul of the child and man.
2. Definitions of Education by Western Scholars
Many Greek and Western thinkers have also presented different definitions of education from time to time.
Aristotle - "Education creates a healthy mind in a healthy body."
Socrates - "The aim of education is to bring to light the ideas of public authenticity which are rooted in the mind of the individual."
Plato - "Education is a process of physical, mental and intellectual development."
Pestalozzi - "Education is the natural, coordinated and progressive development of the inner powers of the human being."
The real meaning of education becomes clear by the various definitions mentioned above. In fact, education is a comprehensive process, which is related to the all-round development of the individual i.e., internal and external development. It continues throughout the life. In short, it can be said that education is a purposeful and lifelong dynamic process. The aim of education is to modify the conduct and other aspects of the individual. As a result of education, both the individual and the society are affected. For further clarification of the meaning of education, a brief description of its main features is also being presented.
