Structural approach :- The structural approach means the arrangement of words in such a way as to form a suitable pattern. There can be many sentence patterns, e.g.

  Ram plays.
  Ram plays cricket.
  Ram played cricket.
The structures of all these sentences is different though the all are the act of playing. Thus, the structural approach is not a new method of teaching but of presenting the patterns or structures of sentences, one at a time, in order of difficulty.

According to C.S. Bhandari
"The Structural approach to English is teaching the learner certain selected structures in a certain order. In structures, meaningful words are used in a particular order to convey their meanings. Structures may be complete utterance or form part of a larger pattern."

According to Menon and Patel :-
"The structural approach is based on the belief that in the learning of a foreign language, mastery of structures is more important than the acquisition of vocabulary.

According to Brewington :-
"The structural approach to English is a scientific study of the fundamental structures of English language, their analysis and logical arrangement."
