Translation Method

The purpose of translation is to reproduce texts in other language. It is used to transfer written or spoken text. The one of the troublesome problems of translation is the disparity among languages. Among the problematic factors involved in translation are form, meaning, style, proverbs, idioms etc.

Following things should be considered by the teacher to teach translation to the pupils -

1. He should have knowledge of target language.

2. He should study the source language before teaching the translation.

3. He should decide sementic and syntactic approximations.

4. Pupils can translate without interruption for as long as possible.

5. Pupils should correct errors immediately.

6. Stylistic errors should be leaved for the revision stage.

Taking into account the process of translation, a teacher can categories translation strategies relating to texts and procedures. Newmark mentions the difference between translation method and translation procedure. Translation methods relate to whole texts while translation procedures are applied for sentences and smaller units of language.
