Specific types of novels are mysteries, romance, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction. A mystery is about a crime, usually a murder and a process of uncovering who committed it. The hero is usually a detective.

Science fiction is fiction that imagines possible alternatives to reality. The imagery part of science fiction is based on known scientific facts. Fantasy is about imaginary worlds. Fantasy novels involve magic. Romance fiction is about the love and passion. Normally the focus is on two characters who fall in love. Historical novels are set in a past time period.
