The difference between the teaching of poetry and the teaching of prose is given by the following points :

(i) While prose appeals to the head, poetry appeals to the heart. Brutus, funeral speech is in prose. It appeals to the head. Antony's speech is in verse. It appeals to heart.

(ii) While prose appeals to the intellect only, poetry is a more powerful form of expression. It effects the whole man, his sense, intellect and emotions.

(iii) Prose is more sight than sound. Poetry is more sound than sight. It appeals principally to ear than eye.

(iv) Unlike prose, poetry is not so much seen but heard. The poet uses music for the expression of his ideas.
(v) What distinguishes poetry from prose is that, in poetry there is a peculiar rhythm that is not there in prose.
(vi) Prose provides information, where as poetry provides delight.
(vii) It is a thing of beauty, beauty of language, beauty of thought, beauty of mood and feeling.
(viii) While prose is for knowledge poetry is for appreciation.
