Aims at Secondary Level :- Secondary level consists of classes IX and X whereas senior secondary level consists of classes XI and XII. The main aim of teaching English after this level are as follows —

1. Students at the end of secondary stage should be able to speak English fluently and accurately. Fluency implies acquisition of a reasonable standard in speech habits which means speaking with an acceptable pronunciation and intonation.
2. They should be able to speak freely. They should think in English and speak it with ease and frequently.
3. They should be able to talk in English and to express their ideas in English in classroom, at school, at home and in society. They should be able to respond and react to situation actively and not remain only a passive listener.
4. They should acquire the ability to understand the native speakers and also be able to respond to them.
5. They should be able to compose freely and independently in speech and writing.
6. They should be able to read books with understanding. They should also be able to read newspapers and periodicals.
7. They respond to short conversational questions and to ask questions himself.
8. They should acquire a vocabulary of 2500 words approximately and that should include frequent and choicest English phrases and idioms.
9. They should be able to use reference material, viz., Encyclopaedia, Dictionaries, Reference Books, etc. when they stand in need thereof.
