According to new study, the percentage of the global population that grew up English as its first language is declining. More than 350 million people around the world speak as a first language and more than 430 million speak it as a second language. English opens doors in academic world.

The United States has the most native speakers at 258 million. In United Kingdom 60 million, in Canada 19 million, in Australia 16.5 million, Ireland 4.5 million speakers.

English in the third largest language by number of native speakers.
British Council’s report (2006) says that the number of people learning English is likely to increase.
