A language is a system. A system is a complex whole. It is a set of connected parts of things. Language is a complex whole like the human body. The system of body functions through different organs such as heart, lungs, brain, ears and eyes. These various organs are interconnected and work in co-ordination. Similarly, the system of language function through sounds, words and structure. These are integrated with one another and constitute the complex whole which is language.

A language is a system of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, which in themselves, are systems. These systems are:–
(i) Phonology  
(ii) Morphology  
(iii) Syntax.

Since language is a system of systems, the whole system of language cannot be taught all at once. Hence there is a need for selection and gradation.
