Diagnostic assessments are broadly classified into two main categories and they are:

(i) Informal Diagnostic Assessment: 

Such assessments are generally carried out in the beginning of a new learning experience. 

For instance, a teacher may kept up some students to gauge and understand how far they processes a grip on a certain topic or subject. 

She could also ask students to complete a survey or simple checklist to gather information.

(ii) Standardized Diagnostic Assessment: 

A standardized diagnostic assessment uses well-defined testing methods to evaluate a student's knowledge and identify any existing gaps. 

These assessments provide teachers with a more in depth analysis of a student's learning, weaknesses and strengths. 

Typically such assessments are conducted after the informal assessments. 

The teacher, first collects spontaneous data on the student’s level of knowledge. 

Thereafter, they apply a standardized method like curriculum based testing to determine student's knowledge of a specific standard.
