There are three kinds of test items and they are (i) Objective Type (ii) Short Answer Type and (iii) Essay Type.

(i) Objective Type : An objective type of test item is one in which the response will be objective. These are broadly classified into two :
• Supply Type (Recall Type) : The respondent has to supply the responses.
• Selection Type (Recognition Type) : The respondent has to select the response from among the given responses.

There is an independent category to which is called the alternate response type (true / false items). There can also be :
• Multiple choice items
• Matching type items
• Completion type test items

(ii) Short Answer Type : It is a kind of question requiring three value points at the most. This type help in ensuring wide coverage of content. The value points when provided for such questions diminish the subjectivity.

(iii) Essay Type : It is a free response test item. These questions help in ensuring a wide coverage of content and have variety of objectives. These questions help in evaluating complex skills.
