Methods of Teaching of Reading

There are various methods of teaching reading to young learners. Some of them are described below.

1. The Alphabet Method : It is the oldest method of teaching reading of a second language to learners. As the name suggests, in the beginning, individual letters are taught to a learner and later on combination of letters.

2. The Phoenic Method : It is an improvement over alphabetic methods as it tries to eliminate the defects of the previous method. In this method, emphasis is not given an individual letters rather 'sound' is emphasized. In the beginning, words of single syllable are taught. Therefore, it is sometimes called 'syllabic method'.

3. Look and Say method : Linguistics are of reading should be natural. English language has irregular sound system, therefore instead of teaching different syllabus, a word as a 'whole' should be taught. This method regards a word as 'indivisible' unit.

4. The Sentence method : The sentence method is more or less similar to 'look and say' method only with a difference that in 'look and say' method, the unit of teaching is a 'word' and in sentence method the unit of teaching is a 'sentence'. It relies heavily on 'situational teaching'.
