Question- Give the importance of English in India. What is the Policy of Macaulay (British) for Indians ?

Importance of English in India :- Just after the independence, English got a serious challenge from some of our people. They advocated that English should quit India with the English. But today again English is in the progress curve in our country. It plays an important role in India's national life and educational system. For this the reasons are as follows –

Language of the Rulers :- English was the language of our rulers. History tells us that every subject of a nation wants to learn the language of its masters. For example, when Muslims ruled over India, Indians tried to learn Persian and Arabic. Similarly, Indians tried to learn English when the British ruled over them.

Policy of the British :- The British believed in and followed the policy of divide and rule. They wanted to create following two types of persons in India :-
• English speaking persons.
• Non-English speaking persons.

Their motive in doing so, was to have to control over the latter with the help of the former. Lord Macaulay suggested in following words,

“We want a class of persons Indian in blood and colour but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect.”
His motive was to prepare a class of persons who would always support to British.
