Question- Write a short note on United Nations Organizations. Explain its Purpose and Principles also.

Answer -

United Nations

United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the name United Nations, and it was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" on January 1, 1942.

On October 24, 1945, the United Nations came into existence when 51 countries agreed to make peace.

The United Nations has six main parts. Five of them are based at the UN headquarters in New York. They are:

  • The General Assembly
  • The Security Council
  • The Economic and Social Council
  • The Trusteeship Council
  • The Secretariat

The sixth part, the International Court of Justice, is located in The Hague, Netherlands.

The UN is not a world government and does not make laws.

The purposes of the UN include:

  • Maintaining international peace and security
  • Developing friendly relationships among nations
  • Solving international conflicts
  • Being a center for harmonizing actions of nations

It helps in solving international conflicts and creates policies on global issues affecting the entire world.

Purpose of UN

The following are the purposes of the UN:

  1. To maintain international peace and security and to take adequate steps to avert wars.
  2. To develop friendly relations among nations on the basis of equality.
  3. To achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.
  4. To be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in achieving these common goals.

Principles of the UN

The principles are the means to achieve the objectives of the UN:

  1. All the member states are equal.
  2. The member states shall fulfill their obligations to the UN honestly.
  3. The member states shall settle their international disputes by peaceful meAnswer
  4. The member states shall refrain from the threat or use of force against any other state.
  5. The member states shall give the UN every assistance in any action it takes in accordance with the UN Charter.
  6. The states that are not members of the UN should also act in accordance with these principles for the maintenance of international peace and security.
  7. No member state shall interfere in the internal affairs of any other state.
