Question- Explain the concept, importance and need of World Peace.
Answer -
It is well known that human beings pay much interest in peace from ancient times until now. Because the word “peace”, apart from being a pleasant word, also refers to the peaceful society and the beautiful world. It can be stated that peace is the greatest and highest goal or hope that everyone wishes to achieve personally and expects to be created in society and in the world. People have been trying by all means to gain peace. Therefore, the history of human beings, in one aspect, is the history of searching for peace. Peace has been talked, thought, taught, and studied in many ways and many aspects.
According to Albert Einstein's view, peace is not only an absence of war, but it means or includes the presence of justice, law, order, or government in society, as he said: “Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, of law, of order – in short, of government.”
World peace, or peace on Earth, is the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom, and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet Earth. Within this idea of the world, nonviolence is one motivation for people and nations to willingly cooperate, either voluntarily or by virtue of a system of governance that has this objective. Different cultures, religions, philosophies, and organizations have varying concepts on how such a state would come about.
Importance of World Peace
When we hear about war, we think of something really far away and movie-like. We might even think it is fun, because we have never experienced one. But war is real and has many, many consequences:
- People lose their belongings, their families, their lives, and everything they know of.
- Those that survive have to choose between living in fear and suffering because they are surrounded by violence, or
- Abandoning everything they know, even their families, and risking everything so they can hopefully move to another country.
This drama that seems so far away to us is the daily reality of many people in conflict zones.
Peace in Conflict Zones
That is why it is so important to attain world peace and make peace in conflict zones. Not only is there always a better way to resolve conflict than creating war, fighting and suffering for the citizens, but also conflict creates a lot of instability and fear in the areas where it happens: consequences like lack of food and water, economic difficulties, a loss of a great amount of people among many others create a big problem not only in the countries where the conflict happens, but in many other areas who need to hurry to gather resources to help those people that they sometimes can’t properly help because they don’t have the means; putting those who want to help in a very complicated and difficult situation where they have to make a hard choice themselves.
All in all, conflict and war are both realities that are very painful and complicated for those living in them, and they have terrible, long-lasting effects in the countries where it happens and also in those wanting to help. To stop the difficulties that these people are suffering and prevent further problems, it is important to achieve world peace.
(1) Differences: The gap between the development of countries suffering from systemic violence and those that enjoy momentary peace grows bigger by the day. Indeed, those countries that need to use their resources to keep peace or fight violence need to take them from fostering education, health, and growth.
(2) World development: Some global issues regarding the environment and fighting pandemics require a global effort. A peaceful society could invest more in technology and dedicate funds to medical care and research rather than defensive or offensive systems. In 2019, the US spent 718.69 billion dollars on the military; that money could have helped millions of people and funded medical research.
(3) Education: Most countries in the world do not have a public education system to help the 773 million adults who are currently illiterate to live a different life. Instead of investing in weapons to defend or attack, a peaceful world could focus on ending this terrifying statistic.
The list could go on indefinitely, but these are more than enough arguments to think that world peace is a must and that the money invested in attacking and defending could close many gaps. Also, that money could help fund medical research that could potentially end much of the ailing of the world.
Need of World Peace
The issue of war and peace has always been a focal issue in all periods of history and at all levels of relations among nations. The concern of humankind for peace can be assessed by taking into account the fact that all religions, all religious scriptures and several religious ceremonies are committed to the cause of peace and all these advocate an elimination of war. The Shanti Path recited by the Hindus, the sermons of the Pope, and the commands of all the holy scriptures of the Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and all other communities hold out a sacred commitment to peace.
Yet the international community fully realized the supreme importance of the virtue of peace against the evil of war only after having suffered the most unfortunate and highly destructive two World Wars in the first half of the 20th century. The blood-soaked shreds of humanity that lay scattered in several hundred battle grounds, particularly on the soils of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, cried for peace, peace and peace on the earth.
