Answer-

Educational Psychology deals with different process and situations in education with psychological orientations. The subject matter of Educational Psychology, can be divided in five groups - the learner, the learning experiences, the learning process, the learning situations or environment and teacher. These are also the dimensions of Education. In this way Educational Psychology walk along with Education it self. Before evaluating the concept of Educational Psychology, first it is better to know its nature.

Nature of Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology is an applied branch of Psychology. It is a science in so far as :

  1. It is a systematic enquiry pertaining to its specific field.
  2. It presupposes some hypothesis for the construction of theories.
  3. It collects data through scientific methods both under natural conditions and control conditions.
  4. It arranged data through statistical techniques to arrive at certain conclusion i.e. approve or disapprove hypothesis.
  5. It always ready to test its laws in the light of new facts.

Evaluation of Educational Psychology

In contemporary education the scope of Educational Psychology is increasing day-by-day. But the day is not past when it was supposed that a teacher cannot become more efficient in his teaching by knowledge of Psychology. Hence to assess the real importance of Educational Psychology in Education a critically evaluate of the concept of Educational Psychology is useful. For this, arguments in opposition and in favour of Educational Psychology are discussed below :

1. Education is a social process and a normative science which involves ethical, cultural, religious and sociological issues. Thus, Educational Psychology is not able to achieve these aims and needs of Education. Educational Psychology explains behaviour of learners in terms of mental and bodily activities. Interpersonal relations of learners constitute society. Hence, through interpret, control and predict learner's behaviour it achieves aims and needs of Education.
2. Problems of education are a product of complexity of environment, both, inside and out side of the school. Therefore, Educational Psychology is not able to solve these problems. Individual difference is the truth of human world. These differences in relation with environment generate various problems, most of them related with human psychic. Educational Psychology teaches the ways and means to diagnosis and cure problems.
3. The job of a teacher is to explain the curriculum to the pupils in class i.e. group situations. Hence, the knowledge of psychology is not helpful. The core of teaching is learning. Educational Psychology explained the process of learning and suggests the means for effective and enduring learning. Moreover, it reveals techniques to generate and maintain interests in learning process.

Need of Educational Psychology in Teachers Training

According to the modern concept of education the teacher should aim at the complete development of the child. This requires that the teacher should have some definite knowledge of educational psychology. Without the knowledge of educational psychology a teacher is not in a position to understand the child and to help accordingly. In such a case, teacher may face difficulties in education. The modern teacher is motivated by a desire to make his teaching more facile, attractive and interesting. To attain these ends, he should needs to be well versed in educational psychology. It also equips and informs teacher to understand the psychology of students and many other interestingly allied subjects. In other words the teacher can solve teaching problem only with the help of educational psychology.

Involvement of Educational Psychology

Different fields of teachers training in which educational psychology involved are as follows :

  1. It helps in understanding the process of learning.
  2. It helps in understanding the behaviour of pupils.
  3. It helps in differentiating the mental levels of children.
  4. It helps in exploring the qualities of teachers.
  5. It helps in developing new and effective methods of teaching.
  6. It helps in designing and improving curriculum.
  7. It helps in selecting and grading extra curriculum activities.
  8. It helps in resolving problems of discipline.
