Question- What do you mean by ‘Democracy in Education’? Explain fully with examples.

Ans.

Democracy in education advocates about the allocation of free and stainless conditions for the maximum growth of human capacities to all members of the society through education. Democracy is not only the rule by people but is also ensures optimum development of every individual within a state. This high sounding political goal can only be achieved through provides the welfare status to all citizens and the way to welfare status is education.

Democracy in Education at National Level

The democracy in education at national level can be achieved following provisions :

(i) To make education universal and compulsory i.e. To provide education to all citizens without any discrimination.

(ii) To make education free i.e. to disseminate all types of education at all levels without charging any fees.

(iii) To make nationwide provisions for equality of educational opportunities while considering individual differences too.

(iv) To make provision for informal education for those who were deprived of formal education practically it means adult education i.e. providing ‘Functional Literacy’ to former illiterates.

(v) To make method of education child centered means to employ individual attention at every level of teaching.

(vi) To make all aspects of education participatory i.e. to ensure students participation in school administration.

Democracy in Different Aspects of Education

The democracy in education can only be achieved if it will be achieved in every single aspect of democracy. Democracy in different aspects of education are as follows :

  1. Democracy in Aims of Education : For the achievement of optimum development of every citizen and to progress the country along with equalitarian values it is essential to realize educational aims orientated to democratic elements. To promote the democratic values among children their personality should be moulded under democratic educational structure and function.

  2. Democracy in Curriculum : At the practical level aims of the democratic education are advanced in educational curriculum. Democratic values makes curriculum diversified, flexible, careful about local, vocational and nation needs, and activity orientated.

  3. Democracy in Teaching Methods : The democratic values framed in curriculum are employed, for optimum result, to produced desired change through democratic teaching methods. Democratic teaching methods give primary place to the interest and needs of the child. These methods encourage rather than force child towards learning.

  4. Democracy in School Administration : A child not only learns by prescribed curriculum but also gain a lot through school environment. School administration controls the school environment. A democratic school administration makes constructive, participatory and fearless environment. This form of administration provides open air to every flower for blooming to its limits.
