Meaning and Definition of Education
Education is the basic source of human development. Through this, the development of man’s innate abilities, his knowledge, art-skills and changes in behaviour are made and he is made a civilized, cultured and capable citizen and this work starts from the birth of man. A few days after the child’s birth, his parents and other family members start teaching him to listen and speak. When the child grows, he is taught the methods of getting up, sitting, walking, eating and drinking and social conduct, and when he is three or four years old, he starts teaching him to read and write. It is at this age that he is sent to school. His education in the school goes on in a very systematic manner. Along with the school, he is taught something in the family and community and this process of learning continues even after leaving the school and continues throughout his life. In a broader perspective, this process of education is always going on in a society. In its true sense, this purposeful process of learning and teaching, which is always going on in a society, is education.
This is also the literal meaning of education. The word 'Shiksha' is derived from adding the ‘A’ suffix in the Sanskrit root of ‘Shiksh’. Education means learning and teaching. Therefore, education means the act of learning. If we consider the English word Education used for ‘Shiksha’, it also implies the same meaning. The word education is derived from the Latin word Educatum and the word A Jucatum is made up of two words A (E) and Duco of the same language. A means from within and Duco means to move forward. That’s why the meaning of education is to reveal the inner powers of the child towards outside.
