प्रश्न- Nouns (संज्ञा) के बारे में क्या नियम हैं?

उत्तर -

1. नीचे वे nouns दिये गये है जिनका singular ( एकवचन ) तथा plural (बहुवचन) में एक ही form (रूप) रहता है

(i) Nouns expressing number: three hundred people; two dozen copies 
But note: hundreds of people; dozens of copies

(ii) Nouns in expressions like a five rupee note; a three year plan,

(iii) The noun series :

A series of lectures was delivered on the topic. Many interesting series of books have just been published by the publishers.

2. Information, luggage, machinery, clothing, furniture सामान्यतया singular में होता है.

The old furniture was disposed of f. Information about the dispatch of machinery has already reached us.

4. Nouns जो नीचे दिये गये हैं, का plural रूप होता है परन्तु singular के रूप में उपयोग किये जाते हैं -

(i) शब्द जैसे - news, wages, summans.
(ii)अधिगम की शाखायें- Economics, statisties, mathematics, mechanics.
(i) Economics is a useful branch of knowledge.
(ii) The news is correct.
(iii) Summans was served on him.

यहाँ यह उल्लेखनीय है कि means का उपयोग singular या plural में किया जा सकता है।

(i) Unfair means were employed by the trade union.
(ii) Wealth is only a means, the end is happiness.
यदि means का उपयोग wealth के भाव में किया जाता हो, तो यह plural होता है-
His means are small, but being resourceful, he will be able to run his business.

5. नीचे दिये गये nouns सदैव plural के रूप में प्रयुक्त होते हैं -

(i) परिधान जैसे- socks, shoes, trousers, shirts.
परन्तु a pair of shoes को singular मानते हैं जैसे-
Leather shoes are costly in England.
A pair of shoes is all I need.
(ii)उपकरणों के नाम - scissors, spectacles.
His spectacles have been lost.
(iii) अन्य nouns जैसे - assets, thanks, proceeds, belongings, savings, riches, credentials, contents आदि
Their assets fall short of their liabilities.
The proceeds of this show are being donated to the P.M. Care Fund.

6. (i) सामान्यतया possessives को nouns से 's जोड़कर बनाते हैं.

Singular: man's
Plural: men's
परन्तु अन्त में s वाले सभी plural nouns के बाद s को हटा दिया जाता है तथा केवल  ' का उपयोग किया जाता है - The customers' complaints, the workers' demands.
(ii) यदि किसी proper noun के अन्त में s हो, तो 's का उपयोग होता है;
जब proper noun के अन्त में es हो, तो s को हटा दिया जाता है।
Dickens's novels; moses' law.
(iii) यदि दो nouns से common possession का संकेत हो, तो 's को बाद वाले से जोड़ते हैं तथा यदि वे separate possession का संकेत करते हों, तो 's को उनमें से प्रत्येक से जोड़ा जाता है.
